The multifunctional hall “Arena Shumen” is part of an overall complex. The idea is to improve this part of the city and for the area to become an attractive, new, vitality, healthy, secondary city center, creating the best training, resting and accommodation conditions for the athletes, as well as for the guests’ entertainment. A 21 decar park with recreation areas is included and a new hotel complex, residential buildings, retail outlets, outdoor children playgrounds and sports grounds are planned nearby.

The terrain is located in an attractive zone at the entrance to the city of Shumen and is well-connected to the urban structure. The barracks that have been situated on the territory have fallen out of use and were demolished. The well-deserved appreciation for the thousands of soldiers is given by the preservation of the Monument to the Fifth Artillery Regiment and the supplementation of a 57-millimeter zenith cannon.



A challenge in situational terms is mastering the natural displacement of the terrain and maximizing its effective binding to the building in functional terms. An important moment is the proper definition and organization of the different groups of visitors - athletes, spectators, journalists, VIP guests. The access road for the two main groups, those of the athletes and the viewers, is directly related to the playing field and to the visual stands respectively.

The playing field, along with all its serving premises - an area for the athletes, judges, coaches, and journalists, is located on the Semi-subterranean floor, while the the main viewing lobby with access to the stands is on the upper level.

The auditorium is designed as a multifunctional space for two main types of events:

                •              sport events – local, national and international competitions in: basketball, volleyball, handball, heavy athletics, tennis, wrestling, boxing, rhythmic gymnastics, etc.;

                •              conferences, concerts, exhibitions and etc.

The auditoriums have a capacity of 1500 seats while the addition of mobile partitions to the top rows, provides the separation of VIP and journalist posts, together with the zones that have already been provided for them on the separate levels. For cultural events there are an additional 800 spectator seats that can be placed on the playfield.



The vision wanted for Arena Shumen is an organic image, distinguished from the sites of this type built in our country. An emblematic, symbolic, memorable, image that will become one of the symbols of the city. A main principle in shaping is the economically appropriate expression of interior spaces within exterior volumes. The auditorium is dominating in height above the service area of the building and the lobby for the visitors, which curved facade walls are naturally raised in the area of the entrance vestibules.


THe construction

The relatively non-traditional shape of the building, as well as the large supporting distances, predetermine the construction as a serious designing and building challenge. The supporting structure over the lobbies, the service premises and the stands is a monolithic reinforced concrete, and for the auditorium - a steel structure, stepping on reinforced concrete columns.

The building is divided into four independent blocks separated by expansion joints. Independent deformations of the individual blocks due to temperature, wind and seismic loads are provided without affecting the roof structure. The roof structure is a system of steel double-layered arched beams with a tensioner, which are stepping at the edges of reinforced concrete columns via elastomeric bearings.

The curved facade walls placed in front of the contour of the floor slabs are solved with a spatially fortified steel substructure, attached to the reinforced concrete structure of the building.


The comfort and safety

The acoustic comfort is achieved with the use of acoustic panels influencing the optimum reverberation time, speech intelligibility and reflection structure. The sound system provides an unforgettable sound experience when conducting concerts. The hall’s lighting covers a complex set of requirements - illumination, uniformity, dazzling limitation, color rendering. 

The ventilation and air conditioning installations provide temperature, air and hygiene comfort. A roof air-conditioning plants Rooftop type WSM CE/B 0352 are installed with energy recovery and a gas heat exchanger. In order to prevent free access of air from the outside, electric hot-air curtains are provided through the doors of the lobbies.

The evacuation exits are ensuring the safety of the viewers in case of fire. The evacuation time is less than 2 minutes for the auditorium  and less than 6 minutes for the entire building. The construction of the building is protected to a second degree of fire resistance. Fire-alarm and announcement systems, as well as a smoke and heat removal systems are also built.


the materials

The used building materials follow the modern trends and principles of durability, functionality, economy and balanced aesthetics. The facade is designed as a ventilated system with excellent heat and sound insulation, weather resistance and easy maintenance and replacement if needed. The interior lines are clear, the colors are harmonious and balanced, and the materials are sustainable and economically feasible.

The development of the surrounding area is based on the logical location of the building within the urban context, its links to the main entrance and exit directions and, of course, to the overall functional structure of the complex. The solution for the lane network, parking, lawns and all other elements of the development are following precisely this principle of organic logic. The site’s materials are once again sustainable and economically feasible.

We hope that as a result of our work on Arena Shumen, a complex functional flexibility is realized in a memorable architectural form.
